Great news from our “Kornjača Spornjača” campaign – the GPS trackers have arrived!
After several months of developing highly specialized devices tailored to the unique characteristics of European pond turtles, three GPS trackers and accompanying equipment have been delivered to Young Researchers of Serbia all the way from distant Mexico!
The research and tracking equipment for European pond turtles in the Special Nature Reserve “Kraljevac” was handed over to researchers today. Starting this year, thanks to technology, they will, for the first time, be able to track pond turtles in real time and collect precise data on their behavior. They will identify nesting sites, movement patterns within their habitat, and the obstacles they encounter. This data will significantly enhance our understanding of their life cycle and contribute to developing more effective protection measures for this strictly protected species in Serbia.
The installation of GPS trackers is planned for May, after hibernation and the breeding season, once ultrasound scans confirm gravid females among the studied individuals.
Follow us on our social media, where we will share updates on this success story through photos and field footage from SNR “Kraljevac”!
This achievement would not have been possible without the support of all the donors who contributed to the campaign. Thank you for making this crucial step in pond turtle conservation possible!
